“Journeys Toward Freedom” - a multimedia exhibit honoring Martin Luther King Jr.’s pilgrimage to India

Event Date:
1 February 2012 - 11:00am - 6:00pm

The American Center will put on display “Journeys Toward Freedom”, a multimedia exhibition that documents the 1959 visit of Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. to India. It describes the impact of this trip on MLK Jr.’s leadership of the civil rights movement, which followed Gandhi’s principles of non-violence and includes striking images of the civil rights movement. The exhibition concludes with reference to the Obama administration, as President Obama is both a product of the civil rights struggle and an admirer of both Gandhi and MLK Jr. The exhibit draws heavily on photographs taken on the trip and afterwards and incorporates multimedia elements, including a video of MLK’s “I Have a Dream” speech.
