Persistence Resistance 2012 will be presenting a selection of rare films from the archive of the Deutsche Film-Aktiengesellschaft (DEFA).
The DEFA retrospective presents films from the former East German film studio which have been selected with the aim of providing an overview of film production in the erstwhile German Democratic Republic. Twenty-two years after the fall of the Berlin Wall, they bear witness to everyday life in East Germany. As part of Germany’s cultural heritage, they are an important source for understanding the history of divided Germany.
The selection features a small section of DEFA Foundation’s mammoth collection comprising 950 feature films, 820 animation films and more than 5800 documentary films that were produced between 1946 and 1992 in various DEFA studios. The retrospective is part of an on-going process of preserving DEFA films as a rich reservoir of Germany's national cultural heritage.
