Workshop on Child Abuse
Abuse is mistreatment or violence against any individual human being. Child abuse is the physical, sexual maltreatment of a child or children. Beneficiaries of the program GAIL GARIMA attended a workshop on Child Sexual Abuse organized at South Delhi Garima nodal centre on 12 July 2013.
Members from Centre for Social Justice (CSJ) were invited for conducting the workshop to create awareness about the child sexual abuse act among the beneficiaries. A 3 member delegation team comprising of Mr. Jonathan Derby (CSJ), Ms. Preyangee Guha & Ms. Elija (both legal practitioner) reached the venue of the workshop by 10 AM. After a brief interaction with the team of visiting delegates, the coordinator of the cluster introduced the beneficiaries to them.
The delegates started defining the terminology and the laws against such practices. They shared about the rights and protection of children with reference to the sexual offences act, 2012 and how Govt. & Supreme Court act on such issues regularly. Mr Jonathan explained that Child sexual abuse (CSA) is a form of child abuse in which an adult or older adolescent abuses a child for sexual stimulation. It also includes involvement of a child in sexual act, financial profit, indecent behavior and selling the sexual services of a child. He also stated the after effects of abuse that might lead to nightmares, depression, coma, flashbacks, fear, Suicidal attempts etc. He also stated that all such offences might incur severe penalty including incarceration and also on the proceedings of the court in such cases.
Beneficiaries raised their doubts during the interactive workshop and the delegates answered their queries. Workshop came to end with a vote of thanks by the coordinator of the cluster.
